The Feeling of Jewelry

What’s So Special About Handmade Jewelry

For me, the significance of wearing jewelry comes from the significance of the piece itself. Whether it’s a piece that has been handed down through generations, one that marks an important moment in your life, or one that is particularly beautiful to you. I have collected pieces in all three of these categories.

When I traveled to Europe for the first time, I only took a backpack and a small carry-on for six weeks of travel. I did this intentionally for comfort and mobility, but also because I didn’t want to tempt myself into buying something large that I would have to take back in my case. So at each destination I decided to get something small to commemorate my time in that location and made sure that it was something that I would use, something practical, so that the memory would regularly surface in my life.

My first stop was Venice and I wasn’t finding anything small enough or special enough to me that I wanted to take home. But on a particularly long walk, made long because it’s easy to get turned around in Venice, I passed a small shop selling trinkets and other things for the second time and decided to go in. There I found the perfect piece: a SMALL pair of earrings. They were little squares of aqua green Murano glass with silver hook findings. Perfect to remember Venice.

And so now I do, everytime I wear them.
